Sometimes good things come from bitter disputation: In 1941 there was a nasty war between publishing bodies and vast numbers of tunes could not be recorded or broadcast. Needing a new theme, Duke Ellington turned to his astonishingly gifted young protégé from Pittsburg named Billy Strayhorn and asked him for something fresh and vibrant. 'Take The ‘A’ Train' was the result. Gianni Marinucci is note-perfect in his delicious complete rethinking of the famous Ray Nance trumpet solo. It’s one of the concert’s many high points.
