Speaking of authentic, how about that wonderful Shane Gillard reading of the legendary Bobby Hackett trumpet solo on String of Pearls? Years ago, Bobby told me Glenn Miller had hired him for the band even though he was having serious lip problems and could only sit in on acoustic guitar (!!??). The canny Miller knew Bobby would recover soon and contribute something like this to an ultra-catchy Jerry Gray tune. It was Bobby’s knowledge of chords gained from his guitar work that made the innovative solo possible. (It was later transcribed for entire trumpet sections and no less that Miles Davis was a huge fan.) Anton Delecca and Julien Wilson are superb in their tenor conversation, a typical Miller ploy.
