about
A Neil Hefti composition first recorded by the ‘Atomic’ Basie band of the '50s (so-called because of the LP cover), Splanky might just be the session highlight. No tune in jazz history swings harder, and this version with its syncopated tension and brilliant ‘call and response’ ranks right up there with the original. Anton Delecca is just fine in the tenor solo role, but the sheer magnificence of this track is a credit to everyone, starting with the tight, nuclear-powered rhythm section. Ever feel down in the dumps over life's travails? Play this track and you'll be your happy, swingin’ self again.
A crisp take on old, scratchy Basie classics. Can't say I'm in love with the vocals, but instrumental tracks are killer.
Lots of good stuff to DJ from here. Jose Tello
I'm digging the covers. Some of these charts are harder to pull off with a small group (i.e. The Jeep is Jumpin'.) Overall it's a fun album with popular songs. The version of Castle Rock especially stands out. Jose Tello
