B Sharp always closes gigs with this Benny Goodman flagwaver, so why not today at Hamer Hall? It was supposed to be the final number of BG’s famous 1938 Carnegie Hall concert, but repeated demands for encores meant it was played third from the end. Drummer Gene Krupa had a starring role at the concert and his memory is effectively honoured by drummer Dave Beck here. Very familiar with the tune, everyone in the band contributes to a hard-driving and very confident performance. Can we have yet another CD of a B# concert before too long? Let’s hope so.
