about
Although everyone plays wonderfully on this live recording, to my ears the trumpet soloists take home the prize on this day for consistent inventiveness and excellence. On 'Opus One', the star again is Shane Gillard, taking on a path blazed by the always-thrilling Roy Eldridge. Much kudos too, to singer Julie O’Hara, whose hero is the woman who did so much with a simple lyric - Anita O’Day, in 1945. This is a rare instance where a tune is a hit twice within two years: In 1944 Tommy Dorsey made millions with the Sy Oliver instrumental version; Gene Krupa with Miss O’Day also enjoyed a huge seller with the added lyrics, including the wonderful “Frankie can croon” line.
