Contrary to the way Jimmy Stewart played him in the movie, Glenn Miller was perhaps the most austere and remote of all the famous big band leaders. A perfectionist taskmaster, he was famously intolerant of quirks and foibles of his musicians. But he put up with the often drunken antics of his great trumpeter Clyde Hurley simply because the Texan played with such joy and swagger. Shane Gillard gets that same rhythmic power in his fine solo on the huge Miller hit 'Little Brown Jug'. A master of dynamics, Miller popularised the ‘softer at the end’ technique first introduced by Chick Webb. He also did it with In The Mood and both records sold millions.
