about
Co-composer credit for In A Mello Tone goes to Duke Ellington and (mysteriously) Milt Gabler, a record producer and the uncle of famed actor and comedian Billy Crystal. The original was recorded by perhaps the best of all the Ellington bands, the 1940 edition, but the Frank Foster arrangement is very much in a Basie bag. Wycliffe Gordon, from deep down south in Georgia, dips into his overflowing bag of trombone tricks and emerges with a swooping and growly solo that pays homage to heroes like Tricky Sam Nanton and Al Grey. Here and elsewhere on this CD, the sax section is nothing less than stellar in its rich, full collective tone.

A crisp take on old, scratchy Basie classics. Can't say I'm in love with the vocals, but instrumental tracks are killer.
Lots of good stuff to DJ from here. Jose Tello

I'm digging the covers. Some of these charts are harder to pull off with a small group (i.e. The Jeep is Jumpin'.) Overall it's a fun album with popular songs. The version of Castle Rock especially stands out. Jose Tello
